How Hevity works, in short
Hevity finds videos that are far larger than they need to be, re-encodes them on your device with hardware HEVC, checks the result frame by frame against the original, and only replaces the original after you approve it. Nothing is ever uploaded, and nothing is ever replaced without your explicit confirmation.
Common questions
A video failed the quality check. What happens to it?
Nothing. If a compressed result cannot be verified as visually identical, Hevity discards the compressed copy and leaves your original completely untouched. You can try again later, and later attempts sometimes succeed if you change the Pro Formats setting.
Why is a video marked as protected and skipped?
ProRes and HDR videos are protected by default because compressing them can remove editing headroom or color detail some users need. You can review protected videos any time and choose to compress them anyway. Very short or already-small videos are also skipped, since there is nothing meaningful to reclaim.
Is my original ever deleted immediately?
No. In Photos, an approved replacement moves your original to Recently Deleted, where it stays recoverable for about 30 days before Photos removes it permanently. In folders, Hevity only replaces a file after you confirm the swap in a compare screen, and only once the compressed candidate has passed verification.
Do I need an account or subscription to use Hevity?
No account is ever required. Compression and quality verification are always free. The free plan lets you apply up to 5 GB of verified savings. Hevity Unlimited removes that cap for a one time or yearly price, handled entirely by Apple.
Does Hevity upload my videos anywhere?
No. Every scan, compression, and quality check happens entirely on your device. Hevity has no servers and makes no network connections for your media. See the Privacy Policy for the full detail.
Compression seems slow, or my Mac gets warm during a big batch.
Video re-encoding uses your device's hardware encoder at full tilt, which is normal and expected for large batches. Hevity keeps your Mac awake during a run so it does not sleep partway through, and you can pause, resume, or stop a run at any time from the folder or queue screen.
What Hevity will never do
- Replace an original file without your explicit approval.
- Upload your videos, thumbnails, or any media to a server.
- Require an account, sign in, or email address to function.
- Track you, fingerprint your device, or bundle advertising SDKs.
Still stuck? Email support@hevity.co.uk with your device model, macOS or iOS version, and a short description of what happened. A screenshot helps more than a paragraph.
